Qiandao Lake
A Bird's Eye View of Hangzhou Qiandao Lake

Qiandao Lake was created in 1959 in building the hydroelectric station on Xin'an River. As the largest artificial lake in china, it has an area of 580 square kilometers with the water storage capacity of 17.8 cubic kilometers. Locals have made great sacrifices in making such a huge dam as two ancient cities including the Lion city and the He city as well as innumerable ancient villages were submerged in water. Since diving is not permitted here, travelers have no chance to see the lost underwater city of Shicheng (Chinese name of the Lion city) at all. But this can't prevent Qiandao Lake to be one of the top 10 vacation destinations in Zhejiang province with more and more tourists from Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou and etc coming to Qiandao Lake to relax themselves and spend their holidays.

Qiandao Lake is dotted with 1,078 green islands large and small. These islands are actually the tops of mountains submerged in the lake. Best way to tour Qiandao Lake is by boat as the stunning views of the lake are actually hidden in its crystal clear water. The narrow and wide water surfaces, the low and high tides, it makes you even doubt if there is a path out when the boat is passing through countless endless islands. Intended tourists please try your best to explore the lake on the sunny day when Qiandao Lake is in its best view. Best time of year for traveling to Qiandao Lake is in April, May, September, October and November.

It has three boats at 8:00 am, 9:00 am and 10:00 am respectively in the morning. We will try to take the first one to be able to return earlier. The boat would take us to three main islands including Moonlight Island, Happy Fishing (Yule) Island and Plum Peak (Meifeng) Island where you can join in fun activities, shopping and eating, tours and sightseeing and etc. Plum Peak Island has the highest altitude where tourists can have a bird's eye view of the whole lake which makes it especially popular with photographers.
