Shanghai Railway Stations Guide


There are four passenger railway stations in Shanghai, naming Shanghai Railway Station, which is also called as Xin Ke Zhan (New Passenger Station) by Shanghai locals, Shanghai South Railway Station, Shanghai West Railway Station and Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station respectively.
Shanghai Railway Station locates in Zhabei District with the largest passenger traffic volume.
Shanghai South Railway Station, known as the former Shanghai Station, locates at the south west part of Xuhui District.
Shanghai West Railway Station, with the former name as Zhenru Station, is a middle stop for Shanghai Nanjing High Speed Railway (Huning Gaotie). Passengers can take Line 11, Shanghai Metro here for downtown area.
Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station started operation on July 1st, 2010. It's the place where Jing-Hu (Beijing-Shanghai), Hu-Ning (Shanghai-Nanjing), Hu-Hang(Shanghai-Hangzhou) High Speed Railways originate. Hongqiao Railway Station is very close to Hongqiao Airport. Passengers can take Line 2 and Line 10 of Shanghai Metro here for downtown area.

Getting to Shanghai Railway Station from Pudong Airport
  • Option 1. by Airport Express

  • Passengers can take airport express line 5 (15 - 20 minutes per) to Shanghai Railway Station directly. There are five stops from Pudong International Airport to Shanghai Railway Station. Journey time is about 90 minutes if the traffic condition is good and ticket fare is RMB 22 Yuan. Operation hour for airport express line 5 is from 7:00 to 23:00
    Remark: This is the easiest way to travel. You don't need to make any more transfer, what's more, the airport express has enough space to accommodate your baggage.
  • Option 2. Maglev Train + Subway

  • Passenger can take maglev train at Pudong Airport and then change subway line 2 at Longyang Road station. Once arriving at People's Square station, passenger should change subway line 1 (to Fujin Road direction) and Shanghai Railway Station is the 4th station to People's Square Station on line 1. Journey time is about 50 minutes and cost is RMB 57 Yuan. Operation hour for Shanghai subway is from 6:00 to 23:00.

  • Option 3. by Taxi

  • Distance between Pudong Airport and Shanghai Railway Station is about 50 kilometers. Journey time on taxi is 70 minutes and cost is about RMB 175 Yuan in daytime's working hours.
  • Useful Note

  • Shanghai Railway Station is the city's largest station in terms of passenger traffic volume. It has trains connecting almost all major cities of China.
Getting to Shanghai Railway Station from Hongqiao Airport
  • Option 1. by Subway

  • Passenger can take subway line 2 from Hongqiao Airport to People's Square station and then transfer to subway line 1 to transport to Shanghai Railway Station. Journey time is more than half an hour and ticket price is RMB 5 Yuan. Operation hour for Shanghai subway is from 6:00 to 23:00.
    Attention Please: Don't travel by subway with big luggage during peak periods from 7:00 to 9:00 as well as from 17:00 to 19:00 as the train is too crowded to board during these two time scales..
  • Option 2. by Taxi

  • Distance from Hongqiao Airport and Shanghai Railway Station is 17km and driving time for the taxi is about half an hour if traffic is good. Taxi fare is between Renminbi 50-60 Yuan in daytime's working hours.
Getting to Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station from Pudong Airport
  • Option 1: by Subway

  • Passenger can take subway line 2 from Shanghai Pudong Airport to travel to Hongqiao Railway Station directly. Journey time is about 90 minutes and ticket fare is RMB 9 Yuan. Operation hour for subway line 2 is from 06:00 to 22:00.

  • Option 2: by Taxi

  • Distance from Shanghai Pudong Airport to Hongqiao Railway Station is 60-70km. Depending on travel itinerary, taxi fare ranges from Renminbi 220 to 260 Yuan in daytime's working hours.
  • Useful Note

  • Hongqiao Railway Station is a high speed train station. Passengers taking high speed bullet train to Beijing, Tianjin, Qingdao, Jinan, Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Wenzhou, Hefei, Xiamen, Fuzhou, Wuhan Hankou, Wuhan Wuchang, Zhengzhou, Changsha and etc should depart here.
  • Option 3: Maglev+Subway

  • Are you curious about maglev trains and want to experience it yourself? If yes, you can then travel by maglev from Pudong Airport to Longyang Road station and change subway line 2 to get to Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station. Inconvenience is that you will have to go through a couple of transfers to travel this way.
Getting to Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station from Hongqiao Airport
  • by Subway

  • Passenger arriving at terminal 2 of Hongqiao Airport can take subway line 2 to get to Hongqiao Railway Station. Journey time is 2 minutes and ticket price is RMB 3 Yuan. Operation hour for subway line 2 (Xujing East direction) is from 6:05 to 23:28. Passenger arriving at terminal 1 can take subway line 10 to get to Hongqiao Railway Station. Journey time is about 5 minutes and ticket price is RMB 3 Yuan. Operation hour for subway line 10 (Hongqiao Railway Station direction) is from 6:30 to 22:50.

Getting to Shanghai South Railway Station from Pudong Airport
  • Option 1. by airport express

  • Passengers can take airport express line 7 (20 - 30 minutes per) to travel from Pudong Airport to Shanghai South Railway Station (or Shanghai South Long Distance Bus Station) directly. Operation hour for airport express line 7 is from 7:30 to 23:00 and ticket fare is RMB 20 Yuan. Riding time on the bus is about 50 minutes.
    We recommend airport express to those trave with big and heavey luggages.
  • Option 2. by Subway

  • Passenger can take subway line 2 from Pudong Airport to People's Square firstly and then change to subway line 1 to get to Shanghai South Railway Station. Time duration is about 80 minutes and ticket price is RMB 8 Yuan. Operation hour for subway lines mentioned here is from 6:00 to 23:00.
  • Option 3. by Taxi

  • Distance between the two place is about 44km and taxi fare is about RMB 160 Yuan during daytime's working hours. Travel time on the taxi is about one hour.
Getting to Shanghai South Railway Station from Hongqiao Airport
  • Option 1. by Subway

  • Passenger arriving at Terminal 2 of Hongqiao Airport can take subway line 10 to Hongqiao Road station and then transfer to line 3 for Shanghai South Railway Station. Time duration on the metro train is about 30 minutes and ticket price is RMB 5 Yuan. Same transportation method applies for passengers arriving at Terminal 1 of Hongqiao Airport.
  • Option 2. by Taxi

  • Distance between the two places is about 15km and taxi fare is about RMB 50 Yuan in daytime's working hours.
Getting to Shanghai Railway Station from the South Railway Station
  • Passengers can take Shanghai Subway No. 1 line or No. 3 line from Shanghai Railway Station to get to Shanghai South Railway Station, and vice versa.

Shanghai Train Ticket Booking Guide


Ticketing Hours:

You can purchase ticket any time at the railway station. Ticket windows there open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
There are nearly 270 train ticket agencies in Shanghai city. Most of these ticket agencies open at 8:00 and close at 18:00. To book tickets from them, you are required to pay addtional RMB 5 Yuan for each ticket as booking fee.
Ticket Reservation Period in Shanghai.

Please note, reservation period at train ticket agencies is longer than that at the railway stations in Shanghai city. That's a big exception in China.
According to the official press release, Passengers can reserve tickets (including tickets of D train, Z train) from the ticket agencies for 11 days (including the journey date) in advance, while at the railway station's ticket windows, passengers can only reserve ticket for 6 days (including the journey date) in advance.
New round of ticket reservation starts at 15:00 of the day.
Advance ticket reservation period for trains from Shanghai to Hong Kong (Kowloon) is 60 days.
During the holiday seasons, reservation period may be shortened to 3 - 5 days.
China has world's busiest railway network and train tickets are in huge demand. We recommend you book your ticket in advance to make sure your journey will not be delayed.

Addtional Tips to Buy Train Tickets in Shanghai for Foreigners

  • Don't forget to take the passport with you. Sometimes, the railway station would reserve some hot tickets for foreign travelers only.
  • No. 10 window of of Shanghai Railway Station serves English speaking passengers.
  • Only cash is accepted at the ticket window.
Telephone and Online Bookings

Passengers can call number wizard 95105105 from Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui provinces to book train ticket. Chinese Citizen ID is required to successfully book tickets from them.
www.12306.cn, Client Service Center of Ministry of Railway of China, provides online ticket booking service for for all trains running across China. Overseas clients may meet language barrier or online payment problem to successfully book ticket through this website.
As an expatriate, you are suggested to book tickets at the railway station's ticket windows or through ticket booking agencies.

China Railway Luggage Rules:
  • Inflammable and explosive dangerous goods, animal and pet are not allowed to take on the train
  • Luggage weight requirment:luggage weight should be under 10kg for of child passenger, luggage weight should be under 30kg for diplomatic personnel and luggage weight should be under 20kg for other adult passenger.
  • Luggage size requirment: Total length of the luggage ( length+width+height) should be under 200cm.
  • You may required to pay for luggage transportation in case your luggage can't meet above requirments.
Requirements for Child Tickets

China railway has special requirments on the height to buy child ticket. Requirments on child ticket can be summarized as the followings:
  • Children with the height under 120cm don't need to pay for rail travel.
  • Children with the height between 120cm - 150cm have privileges to buy discounted train tickets.
  • Despite of age, child with the height above 150cm will have to buy full-priced train tickets.
  • Price for seat ticket for child is about a half of that of adult ticket. Price for sleeper ticket for child is about 70% of that of adult ticket.
