Qingdao Rail Travel Guide


Qingdao City, situated at the southern tip of Shandong Peninsula, faces the Yellow Sea on the east and south, adjacent to Yantai City to the northeast and Weifang City to the west, boarding Rizhao City to the southwest, facing Korea and Japan just across the sea.

As a beautiful coastal city, Qingdao is one of the metropolises that host the most large-scale sport events. Besides, it is also known as" the City of Sails". One of the branch venues of the 2008 Beijing Olympics and Paralympic Games was right located in Qingdao. The Sailing World Cup was held successively in 2013 and will be hold again in 2014 in Qingdao. Moreover, Qingdao will hold not only the World Horticultural Exposition in 2014 but also the World Leisure Sports Meeting in 2015.

Qingdao is among the first group of China's Excellent Tourism City. There are a few national scenic spots such as Laoshan scenic spot, Qingdao Seaside Scenic Spot, Mashan Hoodoos and so on.


Qingdao Railway Station Guide

Qingdao Railway Station, built in 1900, is situated at No. 1, Feixian Road, Qingdao. It is the unique European Style station throughout the country which has the largest underground waiting room in Asia.

It has 6 platforms and 10 tracks along them.


Part One: The layout of Qingdao Railway Station

With a total construction area of 54, 277 square meters, the station has 5 floors in all, including underground waiting room, basement one, ground floor, second floor, and the attic. The station building looks U-shaped along the direction of its east, west, and south. On the south side of the station building there is Exit Hall (closed for most of the time). And, on both the east and west side of the station building there are Entrance Hall, Ticket hall, Waiting Room for General Platform, and VIP Waiting Room. Furthermore, the Entrance Halls are equipped with elevated landscape corridor.

Moreover, at the center of the platform there is passenger tunnel, while over the platform there are column-free canopy with solar panels on its outside surface.

Part Two: Ticketing

The East Ticket hall:

Window 1, 2 and 3 are for the exclusive use of picking up the tickets booked by phone or through the Internet.

Window 4, 7, 8, 9 and 10 are normal ticket windows.

Window 5 is used for the passengers to refund or change their tickets.

Window 6 is a special ticket window for students.

Window 11 is used for inquiring information as well as selling Platform Ticket.

Window 12 is the Accreditation center - providing the passengers with identification document for the convenience of buying tickets and boarding trains.

Window 3 gives exclusive priority to soldiers and the aged.

The West Ticket Hall:

Window 13 and 14 are for the exclusive use of picking up the tickets booked by phone or through the Internet.

Windows 16 - 23 are Normal Ticket Windows.

Window 15 is used for refunding or changing ticket as well as selling Platform Ticket.

All the Ticket Windows give priority to soldiers and the aged. Besides, they provide passengers with one-stop service. For example, windows for ferry tickets and air tickets are also set up in the Ticket Hall.


Part Three: Enter Guidance

from the East Entrance:

1. to the East Waiting Room: the East Entrance → the East Entrance Hall →the East Waiting Room

2. to the West Waiting Room:

(1) The East Entrance →via the South Square →the West Entrance →the West Entrance Hall →the West Waiting Room

(2) The East Entrance →the East Entrance Hall →(taking the escalator up to the second floor) Landscape corridor →(go downstairs by escalator) the West Entrance Hall →the West Waiting Room

3. to the South Underground Waiting Room: the East Entrance →the East Entrance Hall →(taking the escalator down to) the South Underground Waiting Room

from the West Entrance:

1. to the West Waiting Room: the West Entrance →the West Entrance Hall →the West Waiting Room

2. to the East Waiting Room: (1) The West Entrance →via the South Square →the East Entrance →the East Entrance Hall →the East Waiting Room

(2) The West Entrance →the West Entrance Hall →(taking the escalator up to the second floor) Landscape corridor →(go downstairs by escalator) the East Entrance Hall →the East Waiting Room

3. to the South Underground Waiting Room: the West Entrance →the West Entrance Hall →(taking the escalator down to) the South Underground Waiting Room

from the South Entrance:

(1) The South Square (taking the escalator down to) →the South Underground Entrance →the South Underground Waiting Room

(2) The South Square (taking the escalator down to) →the South Underground Entrance →the South Underground Waiting Room (taking the escalator up to) the East or West Waiting Room


Part Four: Waiting the Train

The station building has altogether 3 Waiting Hall- that is the East Waiting Hall, the South Underground Waiting Hall and the West Waiting Hall. The Waiting Halls, with a total area of 7218 square meters, can accommodate 5000 people at a time. Besides, they are also equipped with Waiting Room for infant & mom, VIP and so on.


Part Five: Boarding the Train

The East Waiting Hall is connected with the West Waiting Hall by "Landscape corridor" elevated across the railway lines. Passengers in these two places can take the stairs to the corridor or go there by escalator or stairs, then they go down to the center platforms to take the train.


Part Six: Surrounding Area of Qingdao Station

Qingdao Railway Station is just situated inside the seaside scenic spots. Since it is less than 200 meters straight-line distance away from the Qingdao Bay, passengers can simply overlook the sea just walking out of the Exit. Several hundred meters to the southeast there are trestle bridge scenic spot and Qingdao's Sixth Bathing Beach; Just 460 meters to the east there is Municipal commercial Street of Zhongshan Road; Just 750 meters to the west there is Qingdao Ferry Pier; About 1.3 km to the southwest there is the on-ramps and off-ramps at the Taixi end of Jiaozhou Bay tunnel; About 2.2 km to the northwest there is Qingdao Port Harbor Station; About 800 meters straight to the north there is Xiaogang Wharf.


Part Seven: Transfer Guide

On the south side of the South Square of Qingdao Railway Station, there is a bus station, from where leave many double-deckers for the city sightseeing and buses to surrounding areas.

The buses available are No.2, No. 5, No.8, No.25, No.26, No. 202, No.217, No.220, No.223, No.301, No.303, No.304, No.305, No.307, No.311, No.312, No.316, No.320, No.321, No.325, No.501, No.801, No.802, etc.

Besides, taxi-only lanes are set up on the outside of the East Square to facilitate the process of taking a taxi.

Qingdao Railway Station to Qingdao Liuting Airport

Airport bus Line 2(No.702 bus) is available to and from between Qingdao Railway Station and Liuting Airport. Service time is from 8:00 to 22:40, leaving every an hour. It takes less than an hour with a fare of CNY 20 Yuan.

No.305 bus is also available, but it is a bit slower, taking about 90 minutes with a fare of CNY 5 Yuan.

Riding distance between these two places is about 28 kilometers, and it takes 45 minutes by taxi with cost of at least CNY 60 Yuan.

Qingdao Railway Station to Qingdao Sifang Long Distance Bus Station

You can take No.5 bus from Qingdao Railway Station to Sifang long-distance bus station. Meanwhile, riding distance between these two places is about 8 kilometers, and it costs at most CNY 25 Yuan to travel by taxi.

Qingdao Railway Station to Huangdao

You can go to Huangdao by ferry or fast ferry; besides, taking the freeway of Ring Jiaozhou expressway is also an alternative. However, it is very time-consuming as you will have to take catch bus from Sifang long-distance bus station. If you take a ferry or fast ferry, you should get to Qingdao Ferry first, and then buy a ticket to Huangdao Ferry or Xuejiadao Ferry. It depends on which part of Huangdao you are going. If you are leaving for Development Zone, then you should buy a ticket to Xuejiadao Ferry. Both the Xuejiadao Ferry and Huangdao Ferry are on the west coast, but one in the south and one in the north.

Price of ferry: Qingdao→Huangdao: CNY 7 Yuan, duration is about half an hour; Qingdao→Xuejiadao: CNY 10 Yuan, duration is about 45 minutes.

Price of fast ferry: Qingdao→Huangdao: CNY 10 Yuan, duration is 20 minutes; Huangdao→Xuejiadao: CNY 12 Yuan, duration is half an hour.

Both ferry and fast ferry depart every 30 minutes or so.

Qingdao to the Polar Ocean World

It is about 14 kilometers between these two places, and there are no direct buses. It takes about 25 minutes by taxi with a fare of about CNY 29 Yuan in the daytime or CNY 34 Yuan at night.

Qingdao Railway Station to Jimo

There are direct buses to Jimo at the Bus Staion near the Qingdao Railway Station. However, buses here are in a very limited number. You can get to Sifang Long-distance Bus Station to find more frequent buses bound for Jimo.


Qingdao North Railway Station Guide

Qingdao North Railway Station is located in Licang District, Qingdao. Put into construction on April 1st, 2010, it is expected to come into service in 2014. After that, it will serve mainly multiple unit train and high-speed train, whereas Qingdao Railway Station will serve mainly normal trains.
