Railway Rules and Regulations You Should Know

Chinese rail industry has its own characters and railway rules and regulations are different with any other country in the world. Getting familiar with these rules will make your rail travel in China more successful and happy!
Luggage Rules:
  • Inflammable or explosive dangerous goods, animal and pet are not allowed to take on the train.
  • Luggage weight requirment: child passenger can take luggage under 10kg on board of the train free of charge. Adult passenger can take luggage with weight under 20kg on board of the train free of charge and diplomatic personnel can take luggage under 30km on board of the train free of charge. To transport your luggage free of charge, total length of your luggage ( length+width+height) should be under 200cm.
  • Remark: in practice, some passengers can take over-weighted & over-sized luggage without additional charges on board of the train, depending on if you are traveling during the busy season, if there are enough free space on the train, how the train conductor execute the regulation and etc. The high speed bullet train, or sleeper cabin on the normal train usually has more free space and it's easier for passengers to transport over-weighted luggage free of charge under those two mentioned conditions.
Child Tickets: Requirments, Prices and etc.

Instead of age, China railway has special requirments on height to buy child ticket. Requirments on child ticket can be summarized as the follows:

I have now been told I need to go to Guangzhou instead of Shanghai. I have already bought a ticket to Shanghai. How do I find change my ticket?
    Please help
    Thanks
    Answer:
You will have to go to the departure station to the train you booked to change the ticket. Ticket agency has no right to change or cancel ticket for you.
  • Question: can I purchase more tickets than I need
Is it possible to book and pay for the entire 4 berth soft sleeper cabin, but only have two of us occupying the cabin?
    Thank
    Answer:
No, it's not allowed to travel by the train this way. Your two people will just be allowed to purchase two tickets on the specified train. Train tickets in China are sold under real name system, you will have to show your passport for both of your people before you are allowed to purchase train ticket. With two passport, you can purchase two tickets on the specified train and specified date.
What's more, as a public transport tool, train is widely used by the public people in China which makes it's in shortage most of times. If each of your people occupy two berths, someone else will have no berth to use and that will be unfair to them.
BTW, there are two-bed cabins on some special routes such as Beijing-Xi'an, Beijing-Shanghai, Beijing-Guangzhou and etc.
  • Question: lost property
    Hello
I left my IPOD in a white case on my bed on the T99 train from Shanghai to Guangzhou this morning. I was in cart no 7 and the top bed number 14.
Has it been found and can I get it?

    Answer:
Can you speak Chinese? If yes, please make a phone call to this number 020-12306 ASAP and explain your matter to the receptionist of the hotline, they will help you to contact the train conductor of T99 to see if they found your lost Ipod or not.
Otherwise, you will have to go to the Lost and Found of Guangzhou East Train Station and see if they have collected Ipod for you or not.
    Wish you luck!
  • Question: Train to Hong Kong International Airport (HKG)
Does the train from Guanzhou to Hong Kong reach the Hong Kong International airport?
If not, what is the closest distance does the train do with respect the airport location?
    Regards
    Answer:
Guangzhou to Hong Kong train terminates at Hung Hom Station of Hong Kong. Direct buses are avaliable from Guangzhou to Hong Kong Airport. Once arrive Hung Hom Station, you can take A21 bus to get to Hong Kong Airport directly.
You don't have to go to Hong Kong Airport by train. Direct buses for Hong Kong Airport are available in high frequency from such places as Guangzhou Tianhe Bus Station, Guangzhou Haizhu Bus Station, Guangzhou Yuexiu Bus Station, Guangzhou Huangpu Bus Station and etc. Airport buses also pick up people at some famous Guangzhou hotels including Guangzhou Xin Shi Ji (new century) Hotel, Huayuan Hotel, Huaxia Hotel, Guangzhou China Hotel, Guangzhou Dongfang Hotel and etc.
Riding time is about 4 hours and ticket price is CNY 200 Yuan to CNY 250 Yuan to travel by bus.
  • Question: Recognizing a ticket agency
How do I recognize a ticket agency in any city? What sign or logo should I loook for?
Are there also ticket agencies in Singapore?
    Answer:
You can judge if it's a legal train ticket agency in three steps:
    1. A legal ticket agency has special network to sell ticket, including at least 1 network-based computer and 1 custom ticket printer.
    2. A bronze panel is hanged on the wall of the agency's office, claryfing the authorized administration of railway (name and logo), authorized serial number for the agency and etc. There are nearly 20 regional railway administrations in China, that means, a ticket agency in Guangzhou is authorized by a complete different railway administration with agency in Beijing.
3 Booking fee is required to be announced on a bulletboard that is remarkblely posted in the office of the ticket agency. Only Renminbi 5 Yuan for each ticket is required to book ticket through a legal agency. If someone charges you more than 5 Yuan to book a ticket offline, most likely, she/he is not from a legal agency. Please note, here what we discussed is booking fee.
If you want to let the agency to deliver ticket to the designated place, delivery fee will be generated. Unlike booking fee, delivery fee is unfixed and it's negotiable.
I don't know if there is a legal train ticket agency in Singapore.

  • Question: Is Passport Required to Purchase Train Ticket for an Infant?
i am traveling to beijing from guangzhou with my 6 month old daughter, she was born in guangzhou and has the birth certificate. Can i use her birth certificate as I.D.? because she doesn't have passport yet. and do i need to pay for her in the train? how much? your reply will be a big help to me. thank you.
    Answer:
You don't have to purchase ticket for your daughter, therefore, her passport/certificate will not be required at all. Passport is required only when people are purchasing/reserving tickets. Since she doesn't need a train ticket, her passport will not be required.
You can let her share a sleeper with you. In this case, you should purchase a lower soft sleeper or even a deluxe sleeper as this will make your trip much comfortable. Soft sleeper cabin or even deluxe sleeper cabin has fewer people which makes it much spacious and clean, that's just a infant wanted for travel.
All trains running on Guangzhou-Beijing rail route has sleeper cabins.
  • Question: Can I Purchase Ticket without the Original Passport?

    Answer:
I have no right to give you the final answer, you must understand this.
you can try to submit a copy of your passport to ticket seller and see if it works. If not, you will have to use the original one. My personal opinion is that there should be no problem for you to purchase ticket without the original passport in hand even this may bring unexpected troubles to you.
