Part One: Comparing 5 Different Railway Stations in Beijing


There are five passenger railway stations in the capital city of Beijing, naming Beijing (Central) Railway Station, Beijing West Railway Station, Beijing South Railway Station, Beijing North Railway Station and Beijing East Railway Station respectively.
Beijing West Railway Station is the city's main station with the largest passenger traffic.
Beijing (Central) Railway Station has the longest history. It has been replaced in scale by Beijing West Railway Station since 1996.
Beijing South Railway Station is the original station for both Jingjin (Beijing Tianjin) Intercity Railway and Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway.
Beijing North Railway Station is also known as Beijing Xizhimen Station. Trains from Beijing North Railway Station are mainly for Inner Mongolia, Liaoning Province as well as for Badaling Great Wall in Yanqing county.
Beijing East Railway Station serves a few trains only.
Passengers to take International trains to Pyongyang, Ulaanbaatar and Moscow should depart from Beijing (Central) Railway Station. Passengers to take bullet trains to Tianjin, Shanghai Hongqiao should depart from Beijing South Railway Station. Passenger taking air-conditioned trains to Hong Kong should depart from Beijing West Railway Station.

Part Two: Beijing Railway Station Guide


Beijing Railway Station is an important rail transportation hub of Jingbao (Beijing-Baotou) Railway, Jingqin (Beijing-Qinhuangdao) Railway, Jingha(Beijing-Harbin) Railway, Jinghu(Beijing-Shanghai) Railway as well as Jingcheng (Beijing-Chengde) Railway.
Beijing Station covers an area of 250,000 square meters including building area of about 80,000. It has a tandem map layout which is listed in order as arrival and departure yard, handover yard as well as switchyard. The station building facing north has total construction area of 71,054 square meters with width of 124 meters east to west.The front square has an area of 40,000 square maters.
inside the station, it has VIP rooms, waiting room for soft sleeper ticket holders, standard waiting room, as well ticketing hall for both domestic trains and international trains.
Beijing Station now has 8 platforms and 16 tracks.

Beijing Capital Airport to Beijing West Station

  • Option 1. by Airport Express
  •  

    Passengers can take airport express No. 7 line from Beijing Capital Airport to Beijing West Railway Station directly. Operating hours are from 7:20am to 12:00am. Journey time is 90 minutes and ticket fare is CNY 16 Yuan. Destination of No. 7 line is at the south square of Beijing West Railway Station.


  • Option 2. by Taxi
    Passenger can also choose to take a taxi from Beijing airport to the West Station. Minimum riding distance between the two places is 34km. It takes about 50 minutes by taxi if the traffic is good and cost is more than CNY 100 Yuan (for reference only!). Useful Note: Passenger taking No. T97 train for Hong Kong Special Administrative Region should depart from Beijing Wesr Railway Station.
Beijing Airport to Beijing (Central) Railway Station

  • Option 1. by Airport Express

    Passengers can take airport express No. 3 line from Beijing International Airport to Beijing Railway Station directly. Operating hours are from 7:00am until the airport's closing hour. Journey time is 60 minutes if the traffic is good and ticket fare is CNY 16 Yuan.


  • Option 2. by Subway

    Passengers can take the airport light rail to Dongzhimen station and then transfer to subway line 2 (loop line) for Beijing Railway Station. Total journey time is about 50 minutes and ticket fare is CNY 27 Yuan. It's a fast and cost-saving way. Operation hours for airport light rail are from 6:35am to 11:10pm and operation hours for subway line 2 are from 5:20am to 11:30pm.
    Attention please: Don't ride the subway during its busiest hours from 7am to 9am as well as from 5pm to 7pm for overcrowding.

     

  • Option 3. by Taxi

    Passenger can also choose to take taxi from Beijing airport to the Beijing Railway Station Station. Minimum riding distance between these two places is about 27 kilometers and taxi fare is about CNY 80 Yuan. Please note, taxi fare quoted here doesn't include highway and bridge tolls.
    Useful Note: Passengers to take International trains to Pyongyang, Ulaanbaatar and Moscow should depart from Beijing (Central) Railway Station.
Beijing Airport to Beijing South Railway Station
  • Option 1. by Airport Bus


    Airport bus line 10 can transport passenger from Beijing Capital International Airport to Beijing South Railway Station directly. Riding time is about 90 minutes if the traffic is good. Ticket fare is CNY 16 Yuan each.

     

  • Option 2. by Subway

    Subway is a good option to travel between the two places. Passengers can take airport light rail to Dongzhimen Station firstly. From Dongzhimen Subway Station, passenger can then transfer to subway line 2 (the loop line 2) for Xuanwumen Station. Beijing South Train Station is connected with Xuanwumen Station by subway line 4. Changing between subway lines is very easy as passengers is guided by subway map, on-board announcement and etc. Riding time on the subway is about 1 hour and ticket price is CNY 27 Yuan.
    Operation hour for airport light rail is from 6:21am to 10:51pm, operation hour for subway line 2 is from 5:23am to 11:30pm and operation hour for subway line 4 is from 5:37am to 11:22pm.
    Attention please: Don't ride the subway during its busiest hours from 7am to 9am as well as from 5pm to 7pm for overcrowding.

     

  • Option 3. by Taxi
    The shortest riding route between Beijing Capital Airport and Beijing South Train Station is 34km. Riding time is about 1 hour and cost is about CNY 100 Yuan. Please note, taxi fare quoted here doesn't include highway and bridge tolls.
    Useful Note:Passenger to take high speed bullet train to Tianjin, Shanghai Hongqiao as well as Suzhou, Nanjing, Hangzhou should depart from Beijing South Railway Station.
Beijing Capital Airport to Beijing North Railway Station:
  • Option 1. by Subway

    Passenger can take airport light rail to Dongzhimen firstly and then change to subway line 2 for Xizhimen station. You can see Beijing North Railway Station 100 meters away after walking out from A2 exit of Xizhimen Subway Station.

     

  • Option 2. by Taxi

    The shortest riding distance between Beijing Capital International Airport and Beijing North Train Station is 28km. Riding time is about 40 minutes and fare is CNY 80 Yuan for hiring a taxi.
Get to Tianjin from Beijing Airport:
  • Passengers can take inter-city shuttle bus from Beijing Capital International Airport to Tianjin city directly. Journey time is about 150 minutes and ticket fare is CNY 70 Yuan.Terminal Station for the inter-city shuttle bus is at Tianhuan Passenger Transport Center in Tianjin downtown.


Part Four: Beijing Train Ticket Booking Guide


Ticketing Hours:


Passengers can purchase ticket from the railway station at anytime. Some ticket windows open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
There are about hundreds of train ticket agencies in Beijing. Most of these ticket agencies open at 8:00am and close at 9:00pm. To book tickets from these agenices, you are required to pay addtional CNY 5 Yuan each ticket as booking fee.

 

Ticket Reservation Period in Beijing.

According to the latest official press release, passengers can reserve tickets for 20 days (including the journey date) in advance for all kinds of trains including 4-number train, C train, D train, G train, K train, T train, Y Train, L train. That means, if you want to leave Beijing on June 25th, the earliest time you can reserve the ticket is on June 6th.
New Round of ticket issuing in Beijing starts at 9:00am every day.

China has world's busiest railway network. If you buy the ticket on the date of journey, you may get disappointed as tickets might have been sold out already. We recommend you book your ticket in advance to make sure your journey will not be delayed.

Addtional Information for Ticket Offices of Beijing Railway Stations
  • No. 10 ticket window of Beijing Railway Station provides booking service for English speakers.
  • Beijing West Railway Station has several ticket offices. One locates to the east of the north square, one locates to the west of the south square, one locates at the underground floor between No. 1 North Exit and No. 2 North Exit. No. 11 Ticket window provides booking service for English speakers.
  • Beijing North Railway Station has two ticket offices: one is locate at the underground floor and one is locate at the ground floor.
  • Beijing South Railway Station has ticket windows located at both side of the waitting hall on the 2nd floor.


Booking Ticket Online


The Chinese website www.12306.cn provides online train ticket booking services mainly for local people as it doesn't accept payment by overseas credit card or bank account from overseas banks. To book ticket through this website, overseas clients are required to submit their passport information. The website accepts daily online booking request from 7:00am to 11:00pm in China time every day. Advance ticket booking period is 20 days (including the date of journey) maximum through this website.


Part Five: Railway Rules and Regulations You Should Know


China railway rules and regulations are different with any other country in the world. Getting familiar with these rules will make your rail travel in China more successful and happy!

Carry-on Luggage Rules:
  • Inflammable and explosive dangerous goods, animal and pet are not allowed to take on board of the train.
  • Weight requirment for carry-on luggage: maximum weight of carry-on luggage is 10kg for child passenger, maximum weight for carry-on luggage is 20kg for adult passenger.
  • Size requirment for carry-on luggage: total length of your carry-on luggage ( length+width+height) should be under 200cm.


Requirements for Child Tickets

Instead of age, China railway has special requirments on height to buy child ticket. Requirments on child ticket can be summarized as the follows:
  • Children with the height under 120cm can enjoy free rail travel and don't need to pay to travel by the train.
  • Children with the height between 120cm and 150cm have rights to buy discounted train tickets. Price for a sleeper ticket for a child is about 70% of that of adult ticket.
  • Children with the height above 150cm should buy fully-priced train tickets no matter how old they are.


Part Six: Special Tips and Notices for Foreign Travelers


  • Passengers can book tickets through the train ticket window of Beijing Capital International Airport located at Terminal 2.
  • Passengers can also purchase train ticket at the arrival hall of Tianjin Binhai International Airport.
  • Beijing railway stations & ticket agencies have tickets in different places to sell. That means, you can even purchase ticket for trains departing from Hangzhou to Shanghai when you are still staying in Beijing.
  • Only cash is accepted at the ticket window.
  • Ask: can i buy beijing to hong kong train tickets at beijing railway station? Answer: yes. You should purchase Beijing to Hong Kong train ticket at No. 1 ticket window of Beijing Railway Station or purchase it at the director's window of Beijing West Railway Station. Passport is required to purchase train ticket to Hong Kong. Advance ticket booking period is 60 days for Beijing-Hong Kong train.
