Beijing Railway Stations Guide


There are five passenger railway stations in the capital city of Beijing, naming Beijing (Central) Railway Station, Beijing West Railway Station, Beijing South Railway Station, Beijing North Railway Station and Beijing East Railway Station respectively.
Beijing West Railway Station is the city's main station with the largest passenger traffic.
Beijing (Central) Railway Station is as busy and crowded as usual even though it has been replaced in scale by Beijing West Railway Station since 1996.
Beijing South Railway Station is the original station for both Jingjin (Beijing Tianjin) Intercity Railway and Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway.
Beijing North Railway Station is also known as Beijing Xizhimen Station. Trains from Beijing North Railway Station are mainly for Inner Mongolia, Liaoning Province as well as for Badaling Great Wall in Yanqing county of Beijing city.
Beijing East Railway Station serves a few trains only.
Passengers to take International trains to Pyongyang, Ulaanbaatar and Moscow should depart from Beijing (Central) Railway Station. Passengers to take bullet trains to Tianjin should depart from Beijing South Railway Station. Passenger taking air-conditioned trains to Hong Kong should depart from Beijing West Railway Station.

Transportation Guide


Get to Beijing West Station from Beijing Capital Airport
  • Option 1. by Airport Express

  • Passengers can take airport express No. 7 line from Beijing International Airport to Beijing West Railway Station directly. Operating hours are from 7:20am to 12:00pm. Journey time is 60 minutes and ticket fare is RMB 16 Yuan. Destination of No. 7 line is at the south square of Beijing West Railway Station.
  • Option 2. by Taxi

  • Passenger can also take a taxi from Beijing airport to West Station. It takes about 40 minutes by taxi if the traffic is good. Cost is more than RMB 100 Yuan (for reference only!).
Get to Beijing (Central) Railway Station from the Airport:
  • Option 1. by Airport Express

  • Passengers can take airport express No. 3 line from Beijing International Airport to Beijing Railway Station directly. Operating hours are from 7:00am until the airport's closing hour. Journey time is 40-50 minutes if the traffic is good and ticket fare is RMB 16 Yuan.
  • Option 2. by Subway

  • Passengers can take the airport light rail to Dongzhimen station and then transfer to subway line 2 (loop line) for Beijing Railway Station. Total journey time is about 45 minutes and ticket fare is RMB 27 Yuan. It's a fast and cost-saving way.
  • Option 3. by Taxi

  • Passenger can also take taxi from Beijing airport to the Central Station. Distance between these two places is about 28 kilometers and minimum taxi fare is RMB 80 Yuan.
Get to Beijing South Railway Station from Beijing Airport:
  • The best way is to take Airport Express No. 1 Line. After arriving at Fangzhuan station. Passenger can then transfer to a taxi for Beijing South Railway Station. Total costing is about RMB 40 Yuan.
  • Another way to get to Beijing South Train Station from the International Airport is to take the subway. Passengers can take the Airport Express of Beijing Subway to Dongzhimen Station firstly. From Dongzhimen Station, passenger can then change the loop line (Beijing Subway Line 2) for Xuanwumen Station. Beijing South Train Station is connected with Xuanwumen Station by No. 4 line of Beijing Subway. Changing between subway lines is very easy as passengers will be guided by subway map, on-board announcement and etc.
Get to Beijing Airport from Beijing South Railway Station:
    Distance between Beijing South Railway Station and Beijing Captial International Airport is 38 kilometers. You are suggested to take taxi or subway to get there:
  • Option 1 by subway: you can take subway line 4 from the South Railway Station and then change subway line 2 at Xuanwumen Station for Dongzhimen Station. Beijing International Airport is connected with Dongzhimen by The Airport Express Train. Journey time is about 1 hour for local people and total costing is RMB 27 Yuan. As a new traveler to Beijing, maybe you are not familiar with traffic situations and environments of Beijing subway, then it may take you 1-2 hours to get to Beijing International Airport from Beijing South Railway Station by the subway.
  • Option 2 by taxi: Journey time is about 1 hour (more or less) by taxi from Beijing South Railway Station to Beijing Capital Airport if the traffic condition is good. Costing is about RMB 120 Yuan.
Get to Tianjin from Beijing Airport:
  • Passengers can take inter-provincial shuttle bus from Beijing Capital International Airport to Tianjin city directly. Journey time is about 150 minutes and ticket fare is RMB 70 Yuan.
  • Passengers can also take the bullet train from Beijing South Railway Station to Tianjin.

Beijing Train Ticket Booking Guide


Ticketing Hours:

Passengers can purchase ticket from any railway stations at anytime. Some ticket windows at the ticket hall open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
There are about 100 train ticket agencies in Beijing. Most of these ticket agencies open at 8:00am and close at 9:00pm. To book tickets from these agenices, you are required to pay addtional RMB 5 Yuan each ticket as booking fee.
Ticket Reservation Period in Beijing.

Advance ticket booking periods are different in different cities of China. According to the latest official press release, passengers can reserve tickets for 11 days (including the journey date) in advance for all kinds of trains including 4-number train, C train, D train, G train, K train, T train, Y Train, L train and Beijing Tianjin Bullet train. That means, if you want to leave Beijing on June 15th, you can reserve the ticket on June 5th.

Reservation period for trains from Beijing to Shanghai are reduced to 10 days to control passenger traffic for Shanghai World Expo.
Please not: During holiday seasons, advance reservation period may be shortened to 3 - 5 days.
New Round of ticket issuing in Beijing starts at 9:00am every day.
China has world's busiest railway network. If you buy the ticket on the date of journey, you will most likely get disappointed as tickets may be sold out for some hot travel routes. We recommend you book your ticket in advance to make sure your journey will not be delayed.

Addtional Information for Ticket Offices of Beijing Railway Stations
  • The ticket office of Beijing Central Railway Station locates in the West Side of the Station Building. No. 10 ticket window provides booking service for English speakers.
  • Beijing West Railway Station has several ticket offices. One locates to the east of the north square, one locates to the west of the south square, one locates at the underground floor between No. 1 North Exit and No. 2 North Exit.
    No. 11 Ticket window provides booking service for English speakers.
  • Beijing North Railway Station has two ticket offices: one is locate at the underground floor and one is locate at the ground floor.
  • Beijing South Railway Station has ticket windows located at both side of the waitting hall on the 2nd floor.

Railway Rules and Regulations You Should Know


China railway rules and regulations are different with any other country in the world. Getting familiar with these rules will make your rail travel in China more successful and happy!
Luggage Rules:
  • Inflammable and explosive dangerous goods, animal and pet are not allowed to take on board of the train.
  • Luggage weight requirment: luggage weight should be under 10kg for child passenger, luggage weight should be under 30kg for diplomatic personnel and luggage weight should be under 20kg for other adult passenger.
  • Luggage size requirment: Total length of the luggage ( length+width+height) should be under 200cm.
Requirements for Child Tickets

Instead of age, China railway has special requirments on height to buy child ticket. Requirments on child ticket can be summarized as the follows:
  • Children with the height under 120cm can enjoy free rail travel and don't need to pay.
  • Children with the height between 120cm - 150cm have rights to buy discounted train tickets.
  • Child with the height above 150cm should buy full-price train tickets no matter how old they are.
Special Tips and Notices for Foreigners

  • Passengers can book tickets through the train ticket window of Beijing Capital International Airport located at Terminal 2.
  • Passengers can also purchase train ticket at the arrival hall of Tianjin Binhai International Airport.
  • Beijing railway stations & ticket agencies have tickets in different places to sell. That means, you can even purchase ticket for trains departing from Hangzhou to Shanghai when you are still staying in Beijing.
  • Only cash is accepted at the ticket window.
  • Ask: can i buy beijing to hong kong train tickets at beijing railway station? Answer: yes. You should purchase Beijing to Hong Kong train ticket at No. 1 ticket window of Beijing Railway Station or purchase it at the director's window of Beijing West Railway Station. Passport is required to purchase train ticket to Hong Kong. Advance ticket booking period is 60 days for Beijing-Hong Kong train.
